Recharged, Into the Deep End

2 min read

Two weeks properly switched off, then straight into two governance "firsts" in the same week — either terrible timing, or exactly the right one.

There's a cliché version of "coming back from leave recharged," and a true one: you come back with more in reserve, and that reserve is what lets a busy week not flatten you. This was that week, landing right as things get busier for a lot of people over the next few months — which is exactly why switching off properly, while you still can, is worth more than it looks on the day.

The week itself was dominated by two new sittings: a new oversight board met for the first time under a freshly agreed way of working, and a new group of delivery teams sat through the first session of a newly regular format for talking through risks and issues. Not a new conversation — we've always had it — but a new rhythm for having it properly. Both had the rough edges first attempts always have. There's a distinction I'm trying to get right in that rhythm: what's genuinely outside your control and worth watching, versus flagging everything as cover against blame.

We're changing how the whole programme runs, gradually and not always smoothly. We're committed to it though — evolving so we can operate effectively at scale, and doing that in public, together, counts for something.

Lesson learned

A risk log is only as good as the action next to it. The point isn't naming everything that could go wrong — it's being honest about what's within your control, doing something about it, and escalating cleanly where it isn't. Anything else is just cover.
